Surname Origin: Scottish

Scottish and northern Irish: variant of Moffatt; habitational name from Moffat in Dumfriesshire, named in Gaelic as ‘the long plain’, from magh ‘plain’ + fada ‘long’.

The surname Moffitt was first used in the Scottish/English Borderlands by an ancient Scottish people called the Strathclyde-Britons. It was a name for someone who lived in the place called Moffatt, in Scotland. The place-name is derived from the Gaelic words magh and fada, which mean field and long. Hence, the surname Moffitt means, from the long field.

NOTES:
Thomas Moffitt was born in Ireland [date presently unknown]. He was an officer in the English Army. He married Elenore Riddle, known as "Ellen", on January 20th, 1835. They had two children before moving from Ireland to the East Indies a few years into their marriage. A third child was born in the East Indies and Thomas died before the forth child was born. After Thomas' death, Elenore and children returned to Ireland. Their forth child was born at sea during their return to Ireland.

At some point, Ellen placed her son George in a military acadamy for children whos fathers who died in service. In 1856, at the age of 16, George Moffitt left Ireland on a ship named Galena and immigrated to America through New York. He settled in Coshocton, Ohio. Specific Information on George and Ann Jane's siblings remain unkown. We know that George was born before Ann Jane but do not know the exact birth dates or names of the other two.

Ellen remarried in 1852 to Samuel Mills. They did not have any children together. Samuel Mills died in 1873. She remained a widow up to her death in 1886. She lived her remaining years with her son George Moffitt and family in Coshocton, Ohio. At the time of her death, her daughter Ann Jane McDermott also lived in Coshocton, one lived in Helena, Montana and one in New York.
