| Surname Origin: English The name Silliman reached English shores for the first time with the ancestors of the Silliman family as they migrated following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Silliman family lived in Devonshire. Ancient records reveal the name Silliman is derived from the Old English word saelig, meaning one who is happy and blessed. Spelling variations include: Silley, Silly, Cele, Sully, Silliman and others. First found in Devonshire where they were granted lands by William the Conqueror for their assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Edward Silley settled in Virginia in 1635; Sarah Silley settled in Maryland in 1737; Hugh and John Silly settled in the Barbados in 1660; Thomas Silly landed in Philadelphia Pa. in 1877.
